The Student Council at Plymouth South hosted a successful Turkey Basket drive this November to bring Thanksgiving dinners to local families in need.

In these tough economic times, it has become difficult to afford the everyday commodities that used to be so easy to afford in recent years. Everyone has been hit by the downfall of the economy, and some have become unable to afford a Thanksgiving dinner for their families.

The Student Council has created the Turkey Basket drive in response to this issue. This year was the second year of the program, and was even more successful than the first. Each class put together multiple Turkey dinners, and several advisories within the school took part in helping the community as well.

Student Council had a goal of 13 Turkey Baskets, but 36 were received by the day of shipment. Baskets included items that were donated and purchased by the classes and advisories, such as canned goods, turkeys, and gravy. These baskets were shipped to families on the morning of Tuesday, November 24.

“We had people donate baskets anonymously and go shopping for more food for the baskets that night”, said Lauren Hoar, Executive Board Vice President.

The Turkey Basket drive was a great success, and the Student Council hopes to have an even better one next year.
