Students from Plymouth South High School’s Marketing Department competed in a two-day competition in Hyannis January 7-8. The competition was DECA Districts.
Students can compete individually or in teams.
The first day of the competition consisted of testing. Each group or student took two written tests and two role-playing tests. Then on Friday awards were handed out.
Matt Burke & Shane Deptula, Nicole Chandler & Alex Josephson, Brittany Hunt & Nicole Slattery, Taylor Raymond, and Dylan Reilly were medalists for Team Testing and Role Plays. The overall awards went to Kayla Callanan & Brianna Corsini, Nicole Chandler & Alex Josephson, Halie Grobleski, Aydan Carver & Brendan Krause, Jackie Davies & Leah Pow, and Emma Ryan & Sydney Stimson. The overall award finalists moving on to State Competition are Samantha Barrett, Tommy Gallagher, Taylor Raymond, Brittany Hunt & Nicole Slattery, Dylan Reilly, Matt Burke & Shane Deptula, and Brandon McSorley & Alyssa Reynolds.
Mr. Goonan, a marketing teacher, was proud of the students. “They did really really well. Our kids always step it up and perform well,” said Goonan. He said the competition gets tougher every year.
The students enjoy and benefit from competing. “I love DECA,” said Georgina McFadden, senior.
Students learn to interact with judges professionally and dress professionally. “It’s a great learning experience. You just get so much out of it. It basically gets you ready for the real business world,” said Brittany Hunt, senior.
“DECA Conferences have a phenomenally positive impact on my life. It’s fun, exciting, and very competitive. The skills that I have learned from DECA have prepared me for my future,” said Jackie Davies, senior.
The State Competition (March 4-6) is fast approaching. Students are working hard to finalize and perfect their presentations.
