In an event that is sure to make headlines, the Plymouth South High Schools Theatre Guild will be presenting Disney’s Newsies: The Musical, on May 16th and 17th, 2025, in the PSHS Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 7:00pm. As they get ready to put on this amazing show, here are some things to know before going!
Newsies is a story about a group of New York City newsboys who go on strike for better wages when publisher Joseph Pulitzer places new rules that make it harder for them to sell. The leader of this group, Jack Kelly, rallies the newsies to fight against the unfair conditions. Like the Broadway version of this musical, the PSHS theatre guild will be presenting it in a similar way. The songs are full of energy to represent the serious issues that the newsies are singing about which help create meaningful change. But it’s not just the story and music: Newsies features dancing as well, with dance styles including tap, jazz, and even acrobatics, to show off the youthful spirit of the newsies.
The musical will be directed by Ms. Colleen Egan, co-directed by Ms. Annie Hyde, musically directed by Mr. Jason Luciana, choreographed by Ms. Riley Burke, and stage managed by Liv Turini.
It takes a lot of people to make a show like Newsies come to life, and there are over 40 students in the cast, one of the biggest this school has had in a while! They have been working very hard to make this show as amazing as it already is. Some of the directing team shared what they think of this musical and why you should come see it!
Director Colleen Egan said, “Audiences should come see Newsies because it is powerful and relevant. It shows people that no matter who you are, you can make a change.”
Assistant director Annie Hyde agreed, adding “It’s such an important, relevant show that demonstrates how even young kids can have political impact and power. It also showcases the best of all the talent at PSHS, and it’s been such an honor to be able to work on it!”
To pull off such a show, students need to reflect the energy of the music, and that’s one reason why musical director Mr. Luciana is so excited. “One of my favorite things about Newsies is just how electric the show is, from start to finish! The amount of energy and work our cast and crew contribute to their performance might be the most I’ve seen of any musical we’ve produced so far!”
Tickets are now on sale for audiences to purchase and cost $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for students. The show will run for about 2 and a half hours with a 15 minute intermission. So if you are interested in seeing it, or would like to show off your Plymouth South spirit, come see the show on May 16th or 17th, (or both!) and get ready for a night full of excitement!
