America Needs Stronger Gun Laws

James Donlan, Staff Writer

The average citizen of the United States is capable of obtaining an unlimited amount of firearms and plenty of ammunition. However, no human in this world needs to have more than one gun.

By having low quality gun control, people like Stephen Paddock are able to buy 43 guns and enough ammunition to allow them to open fire for 10 minutes straight. The gun control laws in America are poor and there are many changes that need to be made to help keep the United States safe.

America has the most severe gun violence out of any developed nation in the world. According to the article “How U.S. gun deaths compared to other countries” from CBS News, “Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than people in other developed countries.” .

This is a significant problem. Since firearms are so much more available in America than in other countries, people die much more frequent in America from guns than in other countries. There are also many parts that can be put on guns that a person does not need to have in their possession.

For example, high capacity magazines are able to be obtained. High capacity magazines allow for more ammunition to be fired which turns murder into mass murder.
Stronger gun control laws in the U.S. would also significantly decrease the suicide rates.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 42,773 people killed themselves in 2104 and nearly half of these suicides were carried out with guns. Suicide rates continue to increase in the United States while in other countries the suicide rates are decreasing.

Since guns are such lethal weapons and are not too hard to access America, many suicidal people are attracted to them. Reducing a suicidal person’s chance of being able to get a gun would decrease the chance of them committing suicide.
